Speakers: Some Guy Named Tommy and Briane Willis with the Honors Program
Meeting Notes:
President Layne opened the meeting wondering how many times we have met thus far, and some handsome stranger in the crowd informed him this was our 4th meeting. Layne then passed around a petition to shut down the Fayette Power Plant and talked about upcoming events. He told members of all the boothing opportunities we have in the near future including the Keep San Marcos Beautiful concert series that will be every Thursday for about a month. Layne then passed the floor on to Maia Holmes who talked about the World Walks for Water which is 9-12 at Sewell Park. She encouraged members to come and enjoy the free breakfast, free lunch, and live music and all for a good cause. Layne then resumed control to talk about the Green Living Fair at which ECO will be representing the sustainability efforts of the entire university. Corina took over and talked about the camping trip and invigorated members with her vivid imagery of the campground and her mesmerizing descriptions of how the trip will be. Corina also encouraged members to check out the Texas Geography Student Research Symposium and added that it would be “pretty neat.” Layne asked members to help with the setting up and tearing down of the Farmers Market so he doesn’t have to do it alone. Then Corina talked about the Community Development Block Grant which is a ton of money and community leaders and city officials decide which community projects get funding- most parks in San Marcos we created by funding from this. More student involvement is always a good thing. A man who went by Tommy came into the meeting and needs artists to promote cycling as a sustainable mean of transportation. Austinbikeposter.com is his website. He added there will be BBQ and beer at the art opening. ECO member and Honors Program representee Briane Willis said Monday March 28th from 5-7 some beehive people will be speaking at Lampasas talking about the effects of mountain top removal on bees and a coal guy named Scott who does “cool stuff” will also be talking. Briane urged members to check out the honors program. She also told members to email her if they have any questions her email is bw1262@txstate.edu. Maia made Tom’s job more difficult by adding a last minute announcement about a movie on democracy in North Korea that will be shown at 7pm in ELA 116. The Koreans will be staying at Maia’s place. Because the other guest speaker failed to show up Layne told members that we need to maintain the garden next to Evans and members were so inspired that everyone went outside and tried to work on the garden…even though no one really knew what to do. Meeting adjourned.
