Meeting Notes:
Layne thanked members for coming to this second to last meeting. He also said Earth Day/ Bike to School Day is going to be so big it’s going to be unbelievable. Layne is looking for men. Layne wants puny men and Amazon goddesses Maia, Corina, and Elle to help with the heavy lifting of Earth Day stuff. Layne will be out there at 7am to secure the best quad real estate for us. Between 7-9am and 4-6pm is when the most help is needed. ECO will be responsible for manning the EAA (Edwards Aquifer Authority) and ECO booths and there is free swag available for those who volunteer. Elle talked about hair testing for mercury with the Sierra Club. Elle encouraged members to donate hair because the hair samples are a part of a study that the Sierra Club is doing. She said it will take a month to get the results back. Corina, with tears filling her eyes, announced the date of the last meeting. It will be Pot Luck style and lots of fun, that is also when officer elections will be taking place. Earthday at Aquarena needs volunteers, and the Geo alumni and student celebration will be Saturday (4/30) there will be lots of food and fun. Maia interjected that Thursday (4/28) Texas State will be redoing its Master Plan and looking at sustainability from 7-8:30 at LBJ 3-14.1 she urged members to go and give input. Layne encouraged people to go tell decision makers how to do things, and Maia said they want to hear what we have to say so go get more involved.
Speaker Tom Rutz hopped up in front of the club with nothing prepared, but managed to inform members about his curbside composting business in Austin, and the importance of composting. Tyler Barlow then spoke more about composting and the Bobcat Blend program and showed a powerpoint of all the great things Bobcat Blend is doing. He gloated that Texas State’s Bobcat Blend placed second in Recyclemania contest in the organics division. He talked about his aspirations for the program, and all the organic matter that the program is diverting from landfills and turning into valuable and fertile soil.
