Our Vision

Texas Hydrological Innovations (THI)is a non-profit organization with the objective of improving freshwater management in Texas.

The Project

Natural springs are an essential and dynamic characteristic of the unique and diverse landscape of Texas.  The springs are currently documented and monitored through various organizations and agencies throughout the state.  The data that are collected and made available vary according to their source, and relatively few people have access to these data.  The best way to preserve these extraordinary features is through community effort.  It has been the goal of THI to combine these data in order to produce a comprehensive map based database that is available to the community in an effort to generate a public interest in the springs of Texas.
Using ArcGIS software, THI successfully combined the data from four databases to create one comprehensive database.  The comprehensive map based database from THI is available in two formats: a Keyhole Markup Language Zipped (KMZ) format which is displayed with Google Earth, and a shapefile format which is displayed with a Geographic Information System (GIS).  These formats allow the whole community to have access to this data.  Our comprehensive database will offer a platform for further research while allowing members outside of the scientific community to have access to statewide spring data.  Providing the community with access to this map based database will promote the preservation of one of the most precious resources in Texas.-THI 2010
