Campus Safety Awareness

Don't Be a Victim!

This Website is dedicated to increasing the knowledge of students, faculty and staff of Texas State University at San Marcos on the matter of campus safety awareness.

Follow these helpful guidelines to reduce your chance of being victimized.

In Your Residence

Do not let strangers into the building, even if they say they are students.
If strangers who look “wrong” are in your residence, call 911. This includes sales people, who are not allowed to solicit on campus.
Never loan your keys or I.D. card to anyone.
Lock your door while you are inside sleeping or when you leave the room.
Never prop open locked doors.
Do not leave messages on your door or voice mail indicating when you will return.
Do not keep large sums of money, jewelry or valuable items in your room. If you must, consider renting a safe from the Office of Residence Life.

While Walking

Avoid walking alone at night. Safety escorts, known as Bobcat Bobbies, are available on campus. 512-245-2805
Know where emergency telephones are along your route.
Be conscious of your surroundings. Walk with a purpose.
Have your key ready before getting to the door.
Before entering your car, be sure no one is inside. Then lock all doors and roll up windows.

Y our Property

Theft is the most common crime on campus. Prevent theft by reducing or removing the opportunity.

Lock your door and windows whenever you leave, even if it's “just for a minute.”
Never prop open locked doors.
Do not leave backpacks, purses, laptops or briefcases unattended, even in provided cubbies.
In offices, store purses or backpacks in a file cabinet or drawer and LOCK IT.
Record serial numbers and descriptions of your valuables.
Engrave personal property with your driver's license number.

Bicycles

Use a “U-shaped” lock, not a cable lock.
Lock both wheels and the frame to the rack.
Immediately report suspicious persons hanging around bike racks.

Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles

Always lock your vehicle.
At night, park in well-lighted, high-traffic areas.
Never leave valuable items visible in your car.
If you have valuable audio equipment, consider installing an alarm system or removing the equipment.
All vehicles are required to display a parking permit
